Updates from Love Cambridge

Love Cambridge Community Partnership Fund - The Big Switch On

Love Cambridge are inviting businesses and organisations across Cambridge to form a community consortium to help keep Christmas alive in the city of Cambridge.

The Big Switch On Event is a free event to switch on the festive lights in and around the city centre but there is a considerable cost associated with this. It is attended by thousands of visitors and residents every year and we need your help to ensure it continues to benefit the local community.

With four stages across the city centre with entertainment and performances from local community groups, schools and local musicians the day plays a big part in launching the festive season.

The Big Switch On itself takes place in front of the Market Square to a crowd of thousands all waiting in anticipation of which ‘star’ is going to flick that switch!

The 2011 Big Switch On is taking place on Sunday 20th November.  Entertainment starts at midday with the Switch On itself taking place at 17:00

Love Cambridge Introduce new Member to the Board

Love Cambridge would like to inroduce Chris Williams of Williams Art as our new Director representing Independent Businesses.

Chris takes over from John Carter, who has been on the Love Cambridge Board since the organisation started in April 2009 and has been instrumental in several of our projects including the Love Cambridge Charter.

Love Cambridge would formally like to thank John for his hard work over the last 2 years and we wish him well in his future projects.

Chris's Biog:

Having spent much of his working life running a successful creative services agency in Hertfordshire, Chris upped sticks and moved to Cambridge in 2007 to set up a new art gallery, Williams Art, in the iconic Dale’s Brewery building just off Mill Road.

In 2009 Chris felt that Cambridge artists were desperately short of exhibition facilities so he formed the Cambridge Arts Movement, a collective of around thirty Cambridge-based artists who put on exciting and original exhibitions at Williams Art. He is also involved in Camas, a new social network for fine artists.

Chris lives a short cycle-ride from his gallery and has the fresh eyes of a newcomer, which he hopes to put to good use in his new role in Love Cambridge.

Fantastic Opportunity for Independent Businesses

Family of Guides – Shopping Edition 2

An opportunity has arisen for your business to feature in the award winning Love Cambridge Shopping Guide that forms part of the Family of Guides.

In 2009 Love Cambridge identified a gap in the market for high quality promotional literature on Cambridge. As a result the family of guides concept was developed which saw the series of guides published covering key areas of information for the visitor to Cambridge.

In June 2011 Love Cambridge was awarded the Best Marketing, Events & Promotions Award at the Association of Town Centre Management annual conference for this project.  This award recognises best practise across the UK promoting towns & cities.

CAMBAC Update

CAMBAC are pleased to announce a new safety initiative to hit the streets of Cambridge this Monday night with the ICE (International Cambridge Events) Safety Guardians.

The Cambridge Community Safety Partnership have kindly agreed to fund a 3 month pilot of the Safety Guardians, as an initiative that will contribute to their priority to reduce alcohol related violent crime.  The Safety Guardians will patrol the city centre and green spaces on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings to coincide with the ever popular International Student nights. They will be linked by CAMBAC radio to CCTV, the Police and pubs and clubs in the locality.  The Guardians will provide an additional visible presence to assist visitors to the city and deliver personal safety advice to prevent trouble and personal theft. This is an extension to the Safety Guardian service they have provided at international student events since their official launch in May.

Chief Inspector Dave Sargent, Chair of the City Alcohol Related Violent Crime Task Group said:  “This initiative forms part of our collective partnership response to reducing violent crime in the City and will increase the provision of support and assistance throughout the week, helping people to stay safe and enjoy their time living in, working in and socialising in Cambridge.”

George Bhangoo, licensee of Nusha, Leisure Park said: “We are delighted that we now have support from the Community Safety Partnership to extend our Safety Guardian initiative from nightclubs to the city centre.  We have been using Safety Guardians since May in some of the city centre nightclubs with great success and believe we have made a real positive impact on students.  We are looking forward to working closely with the Police, City Council CCTV and CAMBAC to ensure Cambridge remains a safe and pleasant city to be in and around”

Tony Harold, Cambac Chair and GM of Hyline Security added: “Hyline Security Limited are pleased to be able to support initiatives that help to enhance the safety and security of students within the city, and the ICE Guardians will help to do just that.  Through the Community Safety Partnership funding, this will be a valued addition to the night time economy in Cambridge”.

For further information, please contact Cambac on 01223 457468.

Summer Family Fun at the

Folk Museum!

The summer holidays are almost upon us and while we might not be able to guarantee the weather, the Folk Museum can certainly promise fun and relaxation for the family.

This summer we are transforming our Education Room into a vintage style Tea Room along with a ‘pop-up’ pocket money shop. Families and visitors will be able to choose from a wide range of teas, local cordials and yummy homemade cakes and treats all served in a traditional Tea Room setting.

While the grown ups are taking it easy, children will have the opportunity to find out about shopping in the past with our interactive ‘pop-up’ pocket money experience! Crammed full of traditional (and not so traditional) pocket money treats; children can try out being both customer and shopkeeper. Here they can have a go at weighing sweets, packaging purchases and using old fashioned weights and measures.

Education Officer Tamsin Wimhurst says, ‘We have been working with local artists and bakers to ensure that this is a really special summer experience for the whole family. Admission to the café and shop is free so there’s no excuse not to join us and check out the fun’.

Admission to the Education Room is free.

What’s New at The Gonville Hotel

August will see the beginning of the refurbishment of the final 25 rooms, by the time it is completed in November, all of our rooms will be fully air conditioned with the addition of more wet rooms

We do not anticipate too much disruption for most of our guests whilst the work is not structural and hence noisy. What little there is will be carried out mainly during the middle of the day when most of our guests are out.

Cream Tea Time

Just like sunshine and showers there’s something very “English summer” about a cream tea, which is probably why you’re able to enjoy it whatever the weather. Served between 2pm and 5pm our teas (cream or otherwise) can be enjoyed in our wonderful garden (one of Cambridge’s best kept secrets) or, just as comfortably, in our Atrium Brasserie. So that’s one event the weather can’t spoil.

Update from Menzies Hotel

The first Charity Golf Day was a huge success on the 18th July with 19 teams of 76 players taking on the Championship par 72 Cambridgeshire Course.  The event that had attracted many teams from visitor golf clubs started with tea, coffee and bacon baps prior to a 2 tee start shortly after lunch.

We had many donations for the auction and raffle that followed the fabulous meal after the tournament.  Roger Robinson the Golf Clubs President took centre stage as auctioneer with his wife Edie Robinson coordinating the raffle and fund raising.

The Menzies Cambridgeshire Golf Club was supporting Macmillan and the Oncology department at nearby Addenbrookes Hospital and the event raised a fantastic £2152 to be shared between both.

Shaun Van Looy – General Manager, commenting on the success of the event praised Edie and Roger Robinson for their support and thanked all the teams for making the day such a success.  Planning has already begun on the 2012 Menzies Cambridgeshire Charity Golf Day pencilled in for late June where we hope to see over 100 players taking part.

The Art of Zhen Art Exhibition

The Art of Zhen, Shan, Ren International Art Exhibition is an extraordinarily moving, intimate and inspiring exhibition detailing both an inner spiritual life and an outer human rights tragedy.

Set to show at The Guildhall Market Street, Cambridge from the 16th of August, realistic oil paintings and Chinese watercolours from mostly Chinese artists give a unique insight into the spiritual discipline Falun Gong.

Falun Gong, a form of meditative exercise originating in China, is based on the principles of truth, compassion and tolerance. Part of the exhibition is dedicated to showing how the practice of Falun Gong has changed people’s lives, providing them with a return to traditional Chinese values.

On July 20th 1999 Falun Gong was banned in China, and since that date 12 years ago many thousands of practitioners have been tortured in an effort to “transform” them. Part of the exhibition deals with the terrifying ordeals people – including the artists themselves – have gone through.

Professor Zhang Kunlun, founder of the exhibition and former Director of the Institute of Sculpture at the Institute of Art in Shandong, himself a practitioner of Falun Gong, said: “Our art comes from a pure heart and our work reflects our personal experience. Art is able to greatly influence the way people think and it also directly connects with human morality. And the two interact.”

Dr Zhang was detained for three months in a labour camp in China. In 2004, he started to work with other artists who practise Falun Gong to create this exhibition. United by their experiences, the artists use their art to tell their stories, speak out and call for an end to the persecution of Falun Gong in China.

Eddie Aitken, promoter of the exhibition in the UK, said: “These paintings express both the inner life of a Falun Gong practitioner and the shocking human rights tragedy that is currently unfolding in China.

Our exhibition is a rare opportunity to see the art that has moved and inspired so many people around the world.”   The paintings show the steadfast spirit of those who remain compassionate and tolerant under such harsh persecution. The story portrayed is one of beauty, courage, and justice. And the message is one of hope and triumph.

Entry to the exhibition is free. For further press information email miatra@btinternet.com or call 07956 493481(Miatra).

Flower Power at The Botanic Gardens

Bring the family and join in the fun at the Botanic Garden's summer festival in celebration of flowers. Running each day between 11am and 3pm, from Thursday 4th until Sunday 7th August, there will be plenty of activities to choose from. Pick up a trail map on the gate and discover key points of interest in the Garden – you could drop in at our bee information centre stationed at the Bee Borders, and learn all about the life of a honey bee. Try your hand at making a flower-inspired fizzy bath potion to take home; learn about why flowers smell and take in the different fragrances of our Scented Garden; make your own lavender bag to keep; or are you brave enough to help your children create a pretty hand- or foot-print flower?! The Fairyland Trust will be here too, with their busy fairies running workshops in their magical tent, offering children the chance to make fairy crowns or fairy books.

This event is aimed for 3-16 year olds and there is an event charge of £2 per child, plus £2 per Fairyland Trust workshop, but all are welcome to join in! Children must be accompanied for all activities.
