Update from Love Cambridge

Big Switch On

The Christmas Lights in Cambridge were switched on in a blaze of glory with over 4,000 people in attendance on Sunday 21st November sponsored by the Grand Arcade and supported by Heart 103 and Cambridge News.

The day was a huge success with entertainment throughout the day culminating in the lights being officially turned on by boy band Princes & Rogues. The band found fame on this years X Factor, making it to Simon’s Judges Houses stage of the competition. Described as ‘Geek Chic’ this up-and-coming band sought to bring the ‘fun back to pop music, with a twist of the 80’s’.

Princes and Rogues were joined on stage by Santa, singing his special Christmas song and the world-famous Russian Ice Dancers – stars of Snow White on Ice alongside the Mayor of Cambridge, Councillor Sheila Stuart.

There was also a packed programme of entertainment throughout the city centre including ‘Who’s Bad’ the ultimate Michael Jackson tribute band and the singing sensation ‘Peter Jay’ performing several Michael Buble tracks. In addition there were performances from school orchestras, belly dancers, cheerleaders, local dance, theatre and music groups on the four stages across the city.  The stages were placed in The Grafton Great Court, Lion Yard, Grand Arcade and the Market Square.

The day also saw the grand opening of the wonderful Santa’s Grotto based in the Old Court area of the Guildhall.

The afternoon also saw the Love Cambridge Christmas Parade sponsored by The Junction, Hotel Du Vin, Santa’s Grotto – The Guildhall and Cambridge On Ice weave its way through the historic city centre, starting at 4pm in Burleigh Street and finishing at Market Square in time for the Big Switch On.  Joining them were a number of local dance and music groups along with our Snow Queen on stilts and the Ice Elf! Santa was also pedalled through the city by Cambridge Dutchbikes.

Spectator Nick Double, 30 from Longstanton said “Me and the family have had a great day, there’s a great atmosphere and everywhere you turn there’s more people performing! I particularly enjoyed the Michael Jackson tribute and Princes and Rogues, who really got the crowd going. The switch on with confetti and fireworks was brilliant.”

Love Cambridge is very pleased to announce there are new light schemes in Trinity Street and in Peas Hill on the Guildhall this year which all use energy-saving LED bulbs. Now over 50% of the lights in the city centre are LED and this is increasing each year. Mill Road have also added to their scheme by lighting up the tree on the corner of Gwydir Street.

Love Cambridge would like to say a big thank you to all our sponsors of The Big Switch On and The Parade - Grand Arcade, Heart 103, Cambridge News, Cambridge City Council, Cambridge On Ice, Santa's Grotto, Hotel du Vin and The Junction. Also a huge thank you to Sygma Events who managed the Big Switch On.

Love Cambridge launch the Independent Traders best dressed Window Competition

Cambridge’s independent shops are a vital part of the city’s charm and play a key part in Cambridge’s unique retail offer, especially at Christmas.

Therefore, Love Cambridge are inviting you to take part in a Christmas window display competition. Aimed specifically at independent retailers, this is your chance to help make Christmas in Cambridge extra special this year and to raise the profile of your business. The lucky winner will receive £100 to donate to the charity of their choice.

Taking part is easy, just call the Love Cambridge office on 01223 457179 or email jo.humm@love-cambridge.co.uk to register your interest in the competition by Friday 10th December and decorate your shop window with a festive theme by Monday 13th December - as that week will see a team of judges walking the streets. The winner will then be notified and we will distribute a press release with details of the competition and its winner.

The competition will be judged according to the following criteria:

  • Originality/ Creativity
  • Visual Impact
  • Festivity
  • Coherence of the display as a whole

Last year’s winner was Palenque – the jewellery and gift shop on Sidney Street.

I hope that you will be keen to get involved in helping Cambridge to look its best this Christmas, and best of luck.

HOT NEW ROCKS!

Launching online and in store today is the hot new collection from Lauren Westwood. The fashion brand which is renowed for eye-catching handmade pearl and gemstone jewellery will be featuring stunning gold pieces for the first time. The new range is fashion forward and a must-have for statement jewellery addicts.
Lauren’s new collection for A/W came from a variety of inspirations – travel, family and her childhood in the Gulf, surrounded by different cultures and religions. Lauren explains “I wanted this range to be as special to the people buying the pieces as it is to me – so the designs have been about creating exquisite jewellery with meaning.  By incorporating charms, talisman pieces and of course stunning gemstones each design tells a story.
Our heropieces from the collection have to be the gorgeous Peace-Out Necklace (£125) and Talitha Pendant (£325)– delicate yet edgy designs.  However, there really is something for everyone including the Temple Bracelets (from £28.50) inspired by the “bracelet blessing” given by Buddhist monks, ensuring that Westwood Rocks are a brand you can rely on to design exquisite gemstone jewellery you can afford.

Karen Mac’s One Night Stand with Nick Ellis
At the CAM Gallery, Williams Art, Dale’s Brewery, Gwydir Street
Friday 3rd December @ 7pm

For one night only, Nick Ellis will be joined by the much-admired Karen Mac.

Karen has a classical voice training from Glasgow and has attended jazz workshops with Claire Martin and Ian Shaw in both Cambridge and London. She has performed all over the country at venues such as Center Parcs and the Pizza Express. Locally, she has sung at The Pink Geranium, The Exhibition and Hinchingbrooke Performing Arts Centre.

And Nick Ellis has another life, apart from being a member of CAM as an illustrator/animator.

He has a long musical history as a composer, arranger and performer in a number of different genres. His multimedia concert ‘The Cambridge Nuisance’ – a musical satire on local life `– has been seen at the ADC or at the Mumford over the years. Three years ago, his full-scale musical ‘Pirate Jenny’ toured the country ending up at a London theatre.

On 3rd December, for one night only, he will be presenting a number of his own irreverent songs. As well as Karen, he will be joined by his chum and ex-Beatnix Paul Connelly on guitar, bass and vocals. The trio will also present a varied set of jazz, blues, country and contemporary covers from the last three decades - from artists such as Eva Cassidy, Paul Weller, Dido, Van Morrison, Fleetwood Mac, Simon and Garfunkel, Norah Jones, Damien Rice and Eric Clapton.

Free wine will be available, as will a bucket, primed ready for public donations.

Cuckoo Clothing, the much-loved shop at Burwash Manor is to open a new store at 4 St Mary’s Passage, Cambridge on Wednesday 1 December.

Cuckoo, owned by Michelle Veenman and Kate Bols, has already established itself at Burwash Manor as a warm and friendly shop that offers ‘today’s’ woman a relaxed, informal and personal service. It has been joined over recent years by younger sibling, “Cuckoo Kids” just a stone throw away - making life easier for busy mums.

The new shop, which will sit in the heart of the historic city, promises to have all the delightful character of the existing store, and will be anything but intimidating.  Instead customers will be able to choose from a broad spectrum of clothes including wonderful accessories, jewellery and gifts with a wide range of price points.  The new shop will bring some new brands into the city including Olive & Orange by Orla Keily, Odd Molly and Saltwater.

Michelle and Kate say; “We were recently surprised to hear that Cambridge was voted the most boring city for shopping in Britain, especially given the number of successful, independent businesses that sell a wide range of products.  Our arrival in the city will hopefully show that Cambridge is a wonderful place to shop, especially if you’re looking for something different.  We cherry pick the clothes we sell to help the everyday woman create an individual look.”

Cuckoo Clothing is based at Burwash Manor, Barton in Cambridge.  For more information, visit the website here  or call 01223 262123.  You can also keep up to date on new ranges by following their blog here  and Facebook page.
