Big Switch On
The Christmas Lights in Cambridge were switched on, by Sheila Ferguson, using Orange's Quick Tap technology on Sunday 20th November. The Big Switch On was sponsored by our Community Fund Partners - Dime Events, Skanska Residential UK, Cheffins, The Cambridge Building Society, Orange, Cambridge Water and John Lewis.
Love Cambridge worked in partnership with, Cambridge City Council, Heart 103 and Cambridge News to host the Big Switch On. Approximately 4,000 people attended this years event and enjoyed the fantastic selection of entertainment on offer. Again this year, the event took a real community focus with performances from local dance, music and theatre groups across the four stages located through out the city - The Grafton, Lion Yard, Grand Arcade and the Market Square.
On behalf of Love Cambridge we would like to thank everyone who was involved with the Big Switch On and who helped us to make it such a great day. |

Love Cambridge launch the Independent Traders best dressed Window Competition.
Cambridge’s independent shops are a vital part of the city’s charm and play a key part in Cambridge’s unique retail offer, especially at Christmas.
Therefore, Love Cambridge are inviting them to take part in a Christmas window display competition. Aimed specifically at independent retailers, this is your chance to help make Christmas in Cambridge extra special this year and to raise the profile of your business. The lucky winner will receive £100 to donate to the charity of their choice.
Taking part is easy, just call the Love Cambridge office on 01223 457179 or email helen.hames@love-cambridge.co.uk to register your interest in the competition by Friday 9th December and decorate your shop window with a festive theme by Monday 12th December - as that week will see a team of judges walking the streets.
New for this year!
This year we are absolutely delighted to announce that we have teamed up with the Cambridge News for this competition and our team of judges this year will be shortlisting the top 8 windows. These will then be published in the Cambridge News and the public will be invited to vote for the winner. Voting will be done via the Love Cambridge website so make sure you cast your vote between Thursday 15th and Sunday 18th December. The winner will then be notified and we will issue a press release with details of the competition and its winner. With the extra potential profile that this offers your business at this key time of year there is even more reason to participate.
The competition will be judged according to the following criteria:
· Originality/ Creativity
· Visual Impact
· Festivity
· Coherence of the display as a whole
Last year’s winner was Clement Joscelyne – the gift and homewares shop on Fitzroy Street.
I hope that you will be keen to get involved in helping Cambridge to look its best this Christmas, and best of luck.

Looking for a more meaningful gift for a friend, relative or colleague this Christmas?
Give something that promises year-round enjoyment of some of Cambridge’s most treasured green spaces and historic sites but won’t compromise the planet.
This Christmas why not give a gift membership for Cambridge Past, Present & Future, the charity that looks after Wandlebury Country Park, Coton Countryside Reserve, Barnwell Leper Chapel and other notable sites. It is an ideal gift for anyone that enjoys the great outdoors, is passionate about the history on their doorstep and wants to help keep Cambridge special.
Membership is £20 (only £15, for ages 16-25) for an individual and £30 for a household.
People can get involved as little or as much as they like. Either way members will be making a vital contribution to the charity’s work to keep Cambridge and its surroundings special, both today and for the future.
Open spaces over the festive period
Areminder that unlike many sites around Cambridge, both Wandlebury Country Park and Coton Countryside Reserve will be open as normal over the Christmas period, including Christmas Day and Boxing Day – so wrap up warm and head for the perfect place to offset the festive indulgence.

College Base for Cycling Paramedics
Paramedics in Cambridge are now using a bicycle to beat the traffic congestion and improve response times with the introduction of a Cycle Response Unit based at Sidney Sussex College, opposite Sainsbury’s.
The East of England Ambulance Service Cycle Response Unit ensures that medical expertise is immediately available to deal with emergencies in the heart of a city packed with heavy traffic, cyclists and pedestrians.
Oliver Robinson, one of the paramedics said ‘Sidney Sussex College has been really helpful and being so central it ensures we can attend to a patient at any part of the densely packed city centre in a few minutes’.
The cycle ambulance can deal with all the same emergencies as a regular ambulance.
The fluorescent bikes are packed with a full suite of medical equipment including oxygen, a defibrillator, together with a flashing blue light and a siren.
Sidney Sussex’s Head Porter, Colin Maxted, said ‘It’s great having a paramedic on hand. In addition to dealing with patients across the city the cycle ambulance has already dealt with a College member who became unwell’
The Cycle Response Unit is available from 8am – 6pm seven days a week and if the 3-month trail is successful this may be extended to include Cambridge’s Nightlife.
In the first few weeks of operation the Cycle Response Unit has attended to a cardiac arrest, a fitting child, road traffic accidents, and head injuries.
Oliver Robinson said ‘This morning has been busy with 4 call-outs so far. In the run up to Christmas we are expecting to become even busier and if the winter is as icy and cold as last year we will be in constant demand’.

Iconic Malaysian company establishes its first UK retail presence in Cambridge
Royal Selangor, a Malaysian family business now in its fourth generation, has opened its first retail outlet in the UK outside London’s Harrods, here in Cambridge.
The company began trading in Malaysia in 1885 as makers of fine pewter ware. Today, the name Royal Selangor (pronounced Selangor) is known and respected far and wide in Asia, where its pewter products are sought as desirable to own. In the UK, however, the company is less well known. Now for the first time the name Royal Selangor can be seen over a shop in the UK, here in Cambridge, in Rose Crescent.
Royal Selangor - the ‘Royal’ was granted by the Sultan of Selangor in Malaysia in 1979 and reflects the quality of the pewter and respect for the family – is looking to introduce its pewter to a new market. Its tableware is especially appealing. From burnished platters and pepper pots to wine-glass holders, cafetieres and ice buckets, the designs are various. All are stylish and minimalist. There is also a range of striking jewellery, including cuff links and pendants that can be worn equally well by men or women; beautiful gifts for a baby’s christening or naming day; and a range of traditional, glass-bottomed tankards. The products are effortlessly modern and beautifully designed to sit easily in a 21st century home. They are also affordable and of high quality.
Royal Selangor is delighted to be making its UK home in Cambridge and is looking forward to becoming part of the city and contributing to the community.

Cambridge PR team wins Chartered Institute of Public Relations Award
Phillips Profile Ltd has won the Silver Award in the CIPR Pride Awards 2011, category: Consumer Relations, with its project, The Churchill Rose. The Award was presented at the CIPR dinner held at Newmarket racecourse last week.
The Awards, judged nationally and presented regionally, are recognition by the PR industry of outstanding PR work achieved within a 12-month period, in this case between July 2010 and July 2011.
It is the first time Phillips Profile has entered for an award, and the three consultants concerned: Margaret Phillips, Tania Stafford and Georgina Dunlop are delighted that their first attempt has been recognised by their peers in this way.
‘We are just so pleased to have won silver and for this particular project,’ comments Margaret Phillips. ‘The idea for there to be a Churchill Rose was born out of the discovery that one did not exist. Churchill College was celebrating its 50th anniversary and we were helping to make the grand summer ball a high-profile occasion. I went looking for Churchill roses to decorate the tables, drew a blank, and suggested to the ball committee that the College might commission a rose named Churchill to highlight the College and its namesake. After that, it just – grew.’
And grew to the extent that one of the first plantings of The Churchill Rose was made by David Cameron in the garden of Number 10 in July, in the presence of Churchill’s daughter, Lady Mary Soames; Richard Beales of Peter Beales Roses who had developed the rose; and Sir David Wallace, Master of Churchill College, with Lady Wallace who had chosen the rose from the Peter Beales unnamed-rose collection.
The American Society of Churchill College is now looking to have The Churchill Rose planted in the garden of The White House. The project continues.

Cambridge Fans United Launch New Web-site and On-Line Shop.
Cambridge Fans United , (CFU for short), are the Cambridge United Football Club’s Fans Trust and they have recently overhauled their website and launched a brand new version of their site www.cambridgefansunited.org, together with an on line shop www.cfushop.weebly.com
The project was led by Trust Board member John Bilboa and launched in November following two months of development effort.
John commented
“A lot of people in Cambridge may of heard of CFU in recent times, but perhaps less so about how CFU works and the sort of activities it undertakes.
At the heart of our philosophy is supporting not only Cambridge United, but also the wider community within the Cambridge area.
Being part of the social and business fabric of Cambridge is fundamental to how CFU operates. We see the football club as being an integral and vital part of the Cambridge community. The new website now brings all the various strands which make up CFU together in one place.”
John added;
“I hope that the site will make the latest CFU news and views more easy to find, and also provide more information to both the people and businesses of Cambridge about who we are and what we do. We have some exciting projects coming up in the New Year and the site will be important in keeping everyone informed of progress and the partnerships that CFU are developing.”
Following on rapidly from the main website came the CFU On-Line Shop and with Christmas time approaching it is now stocked with seasonal fayre. John went on to say;
“We have a range of quality products for sale in the shop at the moment, aimed at anyone looking for some Cambridge United themed presents and stocking fillers.
Our 2012 Official CUFC Players and Fan Calendars are now in stock, and have stunning full colour action photos of the first team players.
We have worked with Shaun Brooks, the talented CUFC official photographer, to pick out some of his best work for the calendars, and they are available in both a wall and desktop versions.
There are also matching mugs, notebooks and other items which can be personalised with photos of your choice, and we also have a range of themed Christmas Cards”.
One interesting addition to the shop that John mentioned was in the Book Section where a new title can be found by Rev Stuart Wood of the Barnwell Baptist Church. Stuart is also the Cambridge United club Chaplain.
In “Keeping Faith In The Team” Stuart gives a unique account of a year in what must be one of the most unusual jobs in Cambridge, if not the country.
