Cambridge architects announce plans to convert the Barclays Bank building in Bene’t Street
Cambridge architects, Freeland Rees Roberts, are nearing completion of their plans for converting the former Barclays Bank listed building in Bene’t Street in central Cambridge.
Appointed earlier this year by commercial property developers, Wrenbridge, who own the building, the architectural brief was to convert the site into a ‘mixed-use’ premises, with living accommodation on the upper floors, and restaurant premises on the ground floor. The planners have indicated their consent to the building being developed in this way.
From the outset, the building project has generated a great deal of interest amongst prospective tenants, both for the accommodation and for the two restaurants. The latter are now confirmed: Zizzi’s will occupy the Bene’t Street main frontage overlooking Peas Hill; whilst Cau, part of an Argentinian steak house group, will occupy the 1970’s extension, also opening onto Bene’t Street.
Graham Riley, the Freeland Rees Roberts architect leading on the design of the building, explains how diverse the structure is in terms of building periods: ‘We are looking at four phases in one’, he comments. ‘ It has been quite a challenge to harmonise 18th century, 18th with 19th century and 20th century builds, and a large flat-roofed structure at the rear of the building’.
Interestingly, it has been the 1970’s wing of the building that has proved most challenging with the planning authorities in terms of architectural design. Structurally it is sound; aesthetically, not, in the eyes of the planners and the design panel that scrutinises all central-Cambridge projects, and they wish its appearance to be substantially improved. Freeland Rees Roberts, therefore, is now preparing a revised design of the 1970’s exterior to reflect the architectural style preferences of the 21st century, which includes an eye-catching roofline clad in copper.
Today, any building refurbishment should be eco-friendly. The current, unattractive flat roof will become a sustainable green roof, pleasing to the eye of residents, whilst the building’s eco-credentials as a whole will be improved.. ‘We are planning solar hot water heating to the accommodation,’ says Graham Riley, ‘ and will improve the building’s thermal performance by means of increased insulation, re-glazing and draught exclusion’.
It is intended that the restaurants will be open for trading by next Christmas and the residential accommodation should be ready for occupancy in 2013.
For further information, please contact Graham Riley on 01223 366555, or Margaret Phillips on 01638 500 311; 07710 021 889; hmp@phillipsprofile.co.uk

MILLERS MUSIC CENTRE completed two of their biggest sales of 2011 in December.
A beautiful Steinway Grand Piano was sent to Bristol as a gift from her father to an outstanding 16 year old young lady for being a semi finalist in the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition. She is certainly someone who will make her mark on music in the future.
The second sale was of 12 Yamaha and Hoffmann (made by Bechstein) pianos to a public school for their new music department. As main distributors of both manufacturers Millers have wide experience of their outstanding but different qualities.
Both sales were won against stiff competition but Millers were successful because of their expert knowledge, long guarantees and flexible payment terms. |

Outspoken Delivery Expands Bicycle Fleet
Innovative Cambridge cycle courier company Outspoken Delivery has expanded its fleet of delivery bicycles. The first of three new Cycles Maximus trikes capable of carrying up to 250kg of cargo will shortly be seen delivering to parts of Cambridge city centre which vans and lorries cannot easily access.
Outspoken are a lead partner in an EU sponsored initiative to develop and promote the movement of goods by bike and funding from the CYCLELogistics project have been used to finance the introduction of the new trikes. The three year, EU project, CYCLE Logistics, aims to achieve a significant reduction in energy use for urban freight transport through delivery of goods by bicycle rather than vans.
Deliveries to the inner Cambridge city area can be a problem for delivery companies who do not have a local depot, as the city centre is not accessible between 10am and 4pm. Under the proposed initiative, delivery companies will be able to drop their items at the Outspoken depot, just off Newmarket Road, and the trikes will be used for the final mile delivery throughout the day.
Rob King, founder of Outspoken Delivery said “The introduction of these high capacity trikes will enable us to expand the business into next day delivery and we are already in discussions with a number of national courier companies about final mile deliveries in Cambridge City centre.”
The first trike has already been tested helping with deliveries at the Mill Road Winter fair back in December and for ad hoc deliveries over the Christmas period including transporting 160 boxes of Chelsea buns from Fitzbillies in the city centre to the local post office. These test runs have enabled the trike to be tuned and modifications made to ensure optimum performance.
Rob added “as well as delivering freight and cargo there is also potential for local companies and organisations to advertise on the sides of the aluminium box. We have seen some striking advertisements used on similar bikes in the USA and we are sure local companies will be queuing up to make use of the available space.”
The new Outspoken Delivery cargo trikes are set to become an established feature on the Cambridge streets. |
