Updates from Love Cambridge

Love Cambridge Community Partnership Fund - The Big Switch On

Love Cambridge are inviting businesses and organisations across Cambridge to form a community consortium to help keep Christmas alive in the city of Cambridge.

The Big Switch On Event is a free event to switch on the festive lights in and around the city centre but there is a considerable cost associated with this. It is attended by thousands of visitors and residents every year and we need your help to ensure it continues to benefit the local community.

With four stages across the city centre with entertainment and performances from local community groups, schools and local musicians the day plays a big part in launching the festive season.

The Big Switch On itself takes place in front of the Market Square to a crowd of thousands all waiting in anticipation of which ‘star’ is going to flick that switch!

The 2011 Big Switch On is taking place on Sunday 20th November.  Entertainment starts at midday with the Switch On itself taking place at 17:00

For a more detailed document outlining the partner benefits, please click here or contact Becky Burrell on 01223 457198 or email becky.burrell@love-cambridge.co.uk

Love Cambridge Scoop National Award!

Love Cambridge have scooped an award at the Association of Town Centre Management (ATCM) annual awards ceremony held in Cambridge last week as part of the ATCM Summer School.

These awards seek to recognise excellence in town and city centre management from across the UK.  The award has been given for the popular ‘Family of Guides’ project and won the top spot in the Marketing, Events & Promotions category.

The Family of Guides were developed to offer clear information to all users of the city and cover a number of subjects including Day & Night, Shopping, Markets and Transport.  It pulls together information from all corners of the city and offers these in these unique guides.

The guides are available on a free pick-up in and around the city.  They are available at entry points into the city including all of the Park & Ride sites, major shopping centres, hotels and conference centres to name but a few.

The Love Cambridge AGM

The date for the 2nd Love Cambridge AGM has been set for Thursday 15th September and is being held at The Royal Cambridge Hotel.  More details will be sent out to members via email.

Like 2010, we will be using the AGM as our ceremony for The Love Cambridge Awards and this year we have partnered with Skillsmart Retail and Emerald Frog Marketing to work with us to decide who should win the award for Best Customer Experience for Independent Organisations and the award for Best Customer Experience for National Organisations.

We have also launched the award for Contribution to Climate Change and those organisations that have signed up to the Charter have been sent a self nominating form to highlight what changes they have made to contribute to reducing the citys carbon emissions.  This will be judged by a panel of experts.

Once again, we will also be working with Cambridge City Council to host The Way to Be Awards on 15th September.

Love Cambridge launches a new Offers & Promotions Section on it’s website

Love Cambridge have launched a new Offers & Promotions section on it’s website. Accessed directly from our home page this section details all the current offers and promotions we know about – so if you have something going on and would like us to promote it for you – please email us in the details and images.

This new section will replace the current Wonderful Wednesdays pages but we will have a dedicated page promoting our fabulous selection of late evening offers within the new section.

These changes have been made to offer both our Members and the wider e-bulletin audience better value – we are now in a position to promote all offers and promotions currently being undertaken and not just those on a Wednesday evening.

So if you have something to share please email Helen.hames@love-cambridge.co.uk with your company logo, details of the offer or promotion, including key dates, and most importantly a contact name or link for further information.

We look forward to receiving your Offers & Promotions.

Love Cambridge Launch Web Video

As you may have seen, Love Cambridge have introduced a video section on the Love Cambridge website which sits on the home page.  This is a partnership project with Pepper Rafferty, a local media production company who film, edit and upload the video on behalf of Love Cambridge.

The video can be shared, emailed, put onto Twitter and Facebook pages and is yours to use!

The idea of the video is to use it to publicise the fantastic city that we live and work in.  It will be regulary updated and we need your help to provide content.

If there is an area of the city you would like featured, or if you have an event coming up that could benefit from some exposure then please let us know.

Capital Grants

Love Cambridge is encouraging businesses across the city to work together collectively to improve the general external appearance of their businesses. The Capital Grant programme run by Cambridge City Council could help fund improvements in your street / area so that you can choose ways of improving your city.

Cambridge City Centre Management aims to improve and renew the city centre by developing partnerships with organisations that share those aims.  The Capital Grant Fund is available to cover up to 50% of the capital cost of your project.

Applications must:

*Enhance the vitality and/or economic viability of the city centre Or

*Improve the quality of the experience of people who use the city centre Or

*Make the city centre more attractive or cleaner Or

*Promote or inform people about the city centre Or

*Improve the commercial competitive position of the city centre Or

*Improve the quality of services and facilities in the city centre

How can the money be spent?

Applications should be for capital projects only. Capital Grants are not available for on-going, or running costs. If there are any on going or running costs associated with your project you need to tell us how these will be funded.

We will only fund new projects – we can’t replace existing funding

Who can apply?

We will consider applications from any groups based in the city. Projects must benefit people in Cambridge – this means residents, visitors, or people who come here to work or study.

Your application must show that you are working in partnership, or involve people working together in some way.

Your group should have a Chair, Secretary and Treasurer. If your group does not have these, you should be able to show that you have clear aims, and are working towards setting up a formal structure. You can form a group easily for this project.

If you want to find out more about the City Centre Management Programme please contact Emma Thornton on 01223 457464 or email info@love-cambridge.co.uk

Images documenting the changing nature of daily life, city streets, landmarks and special events will be combined with memories of what makes Cambridge special.

2011 Way to Be Awards

The Way to Be awards were launched in 2004 to celebrate and reward the local services and businesses that do the most for disabled people.

Many local businesses go to great lengths to cater for disabled customers, but there is still a long way to go before Cambridge is as accessible and welcoming as we know it could be.

We have supported the scheme since its launch in 2004, and are keen to encourage actions that benefit Cambridge's disabled citizens and visitors.  The 2010 winners were Richard Thompson's Taxis and Cambridge on Ice

For the 2011 ceremony, the Way to Be award will be presented at the Love Cambridge AGM and Award ceremony on 15 September.

Businesses have appreciated winning the Way To Be Awards and so please do encourage your customers to complete a form.  If you would like to nominate someone or display leaflets in your premises please contact Mark Taylor at markj.taylor@cambridge.gov.uk

New arrivals also include- Wookie Surfer. Chewbacca hits the waves! Awesome print of the Star Wars character sporting board shorts and sunnies and carrying his surfboard.  Vintage looking photographic print.

Talking of sunnies- we have the new Breo range in.great for both gals and guys, a super 80's inspired collection- the Breo Uptones being a store favourite. (Think Ray Bans but with a super soft modern twist). Team these with a great pair of natural rubber (ultimately bio-degradable) Breo flip flops and you are ready to go!

Something for the girl's now- The Farah dress designed in Cambridge by the Mayhem team has been a smash hit for the summer balls. This is THE most versatile dress on the high street (and totally exclusive to us)- looking great on the streets, the dance floor or even the beach. Available in 4 colour washes (more to come!) this is an incredibly soft and interesting garment. The dress can be tied decoratively around the shoulders in a halter fashion or worn around the waist with a bow and many more ways. Inside are small ties offering the ability to create a layered effect for more of a WOW! Lastly there is the option of using it as a skirt with a sash waist.
