Westwood Rocks search for Cambridge’s Best Mum

Westwood Rocks, Rose Crescent shop is full of sparkling little gems, but the store is looking for a gem of a different kind!  With Mothering Sunday only a month away (Sunday 3rd April), we are searching the length and breadth of Bath to find: a gem of a mum, worthy of being awarded Westwood Rocks (Cambridge) Mum of the Year 2011.

Lauren Westwood, Designer and Founder of Westwood Rocks, knows exactly the pressures working mothers are faced with today.  Daily running one of Britian’s favourite pearl and gemstone jewellery brands, whilst juggling looking after her two young children, Sabella, three and Oscar one leaves little time for anything else.

However, Lauren is looking to celebrate motherhood with one deserving Farnham mum, crowning them Westwood Rocks (Cambridge) Mum of the Year 2011.  The winner will receive a £100 Westwood Rocks voucher to spend in-store, plus the opportunity to spend some quality time with their nominee (daughter or son) in our workshop for a personalised jewellery class.  You will each design and then make a stunning piece of jewellery using colourful freshwater pearls and semi-precious gemstones, all under the watchful eye of Lauren herself.

So if your mum (or even someone else’s) is a little gem and you think deserves to be crowned Westwood Rocks (Cambridge) Mum of the Year 2011, we want to hear from you.  Log online here to enter and tell us in not more than 300 words, why your mum is so special and what she means to you.

Alternatively you can deliver your entry to Westwood Rocks, 6 Rose Crescent, Cambridge by Saturday 26th March.  Remember to include your name, address, telephone number and email.   The winner will be chosen by Lauren and announced on our website here  on Friday 1st April 2011.

For more information on our products and workshop classes please contact 08456 434 115 or visit our website.

Cambridge Buskers & Street Performers Festival 2011

Sponsorship Opportunity

In 2011 we plan to hold the 4th Buskers & Street Performers Festival and once again our aim is to celebrate all the local talent we have in Cambridge and for street performers to showcase their acts alongside professional artists from the local area and beyond.  We will also be drawing attention to the Buskers Code of Practice and holding a competition for the public to vote for their favourite busker/street performer.  Voters will then be entered into a draw to win fabulous prizes themselves.

For 2011 we have developed a number of packages for businesses wanting to support the festival.  You will have the opportunity to support a festival, which is incredibly popular and brings diversity to the streets of Cambridge.  Click here to download details

Fans bid to make United a Community Trust Club

Cambridge Fans United has launched a plan to turn Cambridge United into a community football club. Responding to the recent announcement by the club’s Board that they were seeking partners to invest in the future and the invitation from Chairman, Paul Barry, to be part of that, CFU has published a brochure entitled “The Future of Cambridge United FC”.

In it, the fans organisation sets out a vision of how the club could become run by a community trust, using the support and skills of supporters, local businesses and with the involvement of local authorities, with the goal of having a secure, sustainable and ultimately successful football club.

Vice- Chairman of CFU, Robert Osbourn, said “This is an opportunity to se if we can set up and run the club in a new and more sustainable way. You only have to look around in football to see many examples of where the traditional style of a board which invests big chunks of cash on a regular basis to prop up an unsustainable business model has led to crisis upon crisis.”

“Other clubs which have restructured as trusts, such as Exeter, Wimbledon and Telford are being successful and as Paul said at the General Meeting, this week, they are the clubs which we should seek to emulate. We have already been talking to local business people about the potential and there is a lot of genuine interest.”

“We shall be handing copies of the brochure to fans at the home match with Rushden on Saturday and seeking their support for the plan to see if we can make it a reality. Obviously, if there is someone out there with some money and who might want to share in the vision, then we shall be pleased to hear from them.”

Romsey Mill Kickstart

Youth unemployment is approaching one million. If a young person spends four years out of work, they will find it difficult ever to get a job. Romsey Mill work responds to this by engaging young people in motivational, practical courses aimed at progressing them into training or work.  Kickstart and Envision are new courses launched recently.

Kickstart is for 16-20-year-olds. Some have been excluded from school; others are discouraged by their jobsearch; some are young parents. The young people gain two qualifications, as well as learning skills in team building, job-hunting and applications. The course inspires young people and equips them with skills to enter the job market confidently.

Results so far have been outstanding. Of the four who have completed the course, three are now employed and the fourth is attending a ‘Flex’ course (Foundation Learning Excellence). The remaining eight who came to the initial days have either gone on to another Romsey Mill course or are intending to. Plus one now volunteers at Oxfam.

Envision is for young people who are 19+ to: develop keys skills and potential; offer motivational experiences; enable young people to plan a positive future. Part-funded by Adult learning Services, it identifies the barriers blocking the way to work, challenges them and plans a way through.

To support Kickstart or Envision please donate here.  or ring 01223 566492 to speak to the Fundraising and Communication team.

Romsey Mill is a Cambridge-based Christian Charity, working inclusively with families and young people who may be facing significant economic and social challenges. Through outreach, projects and courses, and especially through building long-term relationships, Romsey Mill gives opportunities for families and young people to fully belong, positively contribute and thrive

Businesses in Cambridge get pedalling for new Cycle Challenge

The Cambridge Cycle Challenge is back - this city-wide event aims to get companies competing to see who can get the most staff cycling for at least 10 minutes, from Monday 14 March to Sunday 3 April.

Local organisations are being asked to pledge their support for the Challenge by entering teams and encouraging their employees to get involved.

Last June, the first Cycle Challenge saw 100 Cambridge companies and over 2,700 staff take part. This year, many more are expected to join in the fun of the Challenge.

To join in the Challenge, local companies need to register via the Challenge website www.cambridgecyclechallenge.org.uk. Staff can then sign up, log their cycle journeys, enter the free prize draw and see how their team - and the competition - is doing. Participants can cycle at a time to suit them (it doesn't have to be their commute to work).

Teams and individuals can win some great prizes, including cinema tickets, shopping vouchers, massages, cycling gear and, best of all, a brand new bike.

In an exciting twist, the Challenge will also see Cambridge going head-to-head with York after defeating Oxford in 2010. The battle is on to see which city can attract the greatest number of new cyclists to take part.

Companies can compete in one of six different categories, depending on their size. Those who have already pledged to take part this year include John Lewis, The Babraham Institute, Fauna and Flora International, The Wellcome Trust, Anglia Ruskin University and Siemens.

For more information and to register your business or organisation, click here . Free support, incentives and assistance is available for all participating businesses.

The Cambridge Cycle Challenge is being organised by Cycle Cambridge, a joint campaign of local authorities led by Cambridgeshire County Council that will see around £7 million spent on encouraging cycling in Cambridge as well as the surrounding villages. It is being implemented by CTC Challenge for Change (a partnership between CTC Charitable Trust and Challenge for Change) and the Travel for Work team.
