Love Cambridge Community Partnership Fund -

The Big Switch On

Love Cambridge are inviting businesses and organisations across Cambridge to form a community consortium to help keep Christmas alive in the city of Cambridge.

The Big Switch On Event is a free event to switch on the festive lights in and around the city centre but there is a considerable cost associated with this. It is attended by thousands of visitors and residents every year and we need your help to ensure it continues to benefit the local community.

With four stages across the city centre with entertainment and performances from local community groups, schools and local musicians the day plays a big part in launching the festive season.

The Big Switch On itself takes place in front of the Market Square to a crowd of thousands all waiting in anticipation of which ‘star’ is going to flick that switch!

The 2011 Big Switch On is taking place on Sunday 20th November.  Entertainment starts at midday with the Switch On itself taking place at 17:00
For a more detailed document outlining the partner benefits, please click here or contact Becky Burrell on 01223 457198 or email becky.burrell@love-cambridge.co.uk

Fantastic Opportunity for Independent Businesses

Family of Guides – Shopping Edition 2

An opportunity has arisen for your business to feature in the award winning Love Cambridge Shopping Guide that forms part of the Family of Guides.

In 2009 Love Cambridge identified a gap in the market for high quality promotional literature on Cambridge. As a result the family of guides concept was developed which saw the series of guides published covering key areas of information for the visitor to Cambridge.

In June 2011 Love Cambridge was awarded the Best Marketing, Events & Promotions Award at the Association of Town Centre Management annual conference for this project.  This award recognises best practise across the UK promoting towns & cities.

What are the guides?

There are currently four guides that sit together as a family in bespoke racks distributed at key entry points to the city and in key locations across the city. The guides consist of:

  • Day and Night
  • Shopping
  • Transport
  • Markets
The guides are available for free pickup throughout the city in the following locations

  • In all major shopping centres
  • The Tourist Information Centre
  • A large number of hotels and B&B’s throughout the City
  • A number of Cambridge University Colleges
  • Cambridge Museums
  • All Park and Ride sites
  • Conference Venues
  • A number of schools, libraries and letting agents
  • Online via the above locations and the Love Cambridge website (www.love-cambridge.co.uk)

We are now working on Edition 2 of the Shopping Guide and have a number of opportunities for Independent Businesses to get involved and promote their products and services to thousands of visitors and users of the city.  The print run will be 100,000 and anticipated shelf life will be 18 months.

Recognising the importance of independent retailers in Cambridge approximately 50% of the guide is dedicated to promoting such businesses in a section entitled ‘Hidden Gems’ of the city

Option 1:

Approximately 40 words plus image and businesses contact details will cost £150 + VAT

Option 2:

Approximately 80 words plus image and business contact details  plus a FREE entry into our new voucher booklet (see below for further details) will cost £300 +VAT

NEW Love Cambridge Voucher Booklet in partnership with Cambridge News

Launching in Autumn 2011, the Voucher Book will detail a range of Autumn/Winter offers from a number of different sectors.  With 64 unique vouchers and a planned shelf life of approximately 6 months, 10,000 hard copies of the Voucher Book will be printed.  With vouchers also available to download from the Love Cambridge website, the product will be highly accessible.

Taking a double space in the Shopping Guide will automatically give you a space in the voucher booklet free of charge.  All that we ask is that you adhere to the expected shelf life and do not restrict the offer too heavily during this time.

The remaining vouchers will be distributed at the discretion of Love Cambridge to ensure there is balanced mix of businesses and sectors represented within the voucher book.

So, to confirm your place in both the Shopping Guide and Voucher Book please call 01223 457198 or email becky.burrell@love-cambridge.co.uk.

Festival of Ideas 2011

Wednesday 19 October – Sunday 30 October 2011

Freedom, revolution and communication have shaped human history since the dawn of mankind.

These three themes form the backbone of this year’s Festival of Ideas at the University of Cambridge – the UK’s only arts, humanities and social sciences festival.

Throughout the Festival, we will debate some of the biggest questions in modern times. As the population hits seven billion, we ask: can the Earth sustain this many people and is reproductive freedom a fundamental liberty? Is Wikileaks causing a Web revolution or setting the stage for net censorship? Will the English language ever become extinct and why are so many other languages under threat? And what can be done to manage the risks of living in places prone to natural disasters?

There is also a special community performance of Stephen Montague’s remarkable work Dark Sun – August 1945, conceived as a memorial to the victims of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings. Or you can take part in a workshop on the role of bilingualism and diversity in schools, or explore the diversity of religious and other beliefs in Cambridge with the Communicating what we believe series.

The main day of the Festival on Saturday 22 October is bursting with free events for the whole family to enjoy. There will be talks by world-famous children’s authors Marcus Sedgwick (Midwinterblood) and zombie-loving Charlie Higson (Young Bond and The Enemy), debates by pioneering academics, dance performances and dozens of hands on activities for adults as well as children.

For more information and a programme, please call: 01223 766766 or visit the website

Cambridge Wordfest Winter 2011

This year’s Winter Cambridge Wordfest takes place on Sunday 27 November and will provide a varied and vibrant line-up of exciting author events including:

Private Eye at 50 with Ian Hislop & Adam McQueen:  Private Eye is Britains first, most successful and indeed only fortnightly satirical magazine which has somehow managed to survive for half a century during which it has consistently entertained, informed and irritated its readers

The Lady & the Peacock: The Life of Aung San Suu Kyi by Peter Popham: A fascinating talk by the author of the definitive biography of Burma’s pro-democracy leader.

David Baddiel: The Death of Eli Gold. Comedian, columnist and author of the critically-praised The Secret Purposes joins us to discuss his new novel.

Vikram Seth: The Rivered Earth. Perhaps best known for his masterpiece A Suitable Boy Vikram Seth is quite simple one of the best writers of his generation.

Diana Athill: Her Life & Work.  Prolific memoirist and winner of the Costa Biography Award for Somewhere Towards the End, Diana Athill will discuss her life and work and her latest publication Instead of a Book, which reveals a sharply intelligent woman with a wicked sense of humour, a keen eye for the absurd and a fierce sense of loyalty.

Mill Road Winter Fair 3rd December

It's sure to be bigger and better than past years as the fair
continues to grow and draw a wider audience. It helps that Mill Road
was short listed for Google Street Awards' "Hippest Street".
 It has
really become a beacon of the area and an event that people now look
forward to. There's been wild interest in vendors and performers from
abroad wanting to be included in the fair but we're really keeping the
focus on highlighting all the brilliant talent and products that we
can find locally, within our little Mill road and Cambridge community.
There's all day activities and entertainment making it fun for
children as well as a brilliant date destination, as well as a great
destination to find fantastic Christmas presents on special deals.
This year there will be three parades scheduled throughout the day as
well as non stop workshops, food sampling, live music and dancing in
the streets like years past. The more languages and diversity the
better.

There will also be a special tribute to the founder of the Mill Road
Winter Fair, Suzy Oakes, who sadly passed away this summer. There will
be a tribute to her honour after the opening ceremony organised and
performed by the children of Parkside that she would be proud of. (in
August hundreds of people lined the street as the hearse drove down
Mill Road applauding her and holding sunflowers as a tribute; a
beloved women in the area).

Mill Road Fair is such a great way to kick start the winter season, to
get to meet your neighbours and experience a breadth of cultural
customs just by walking out your door. We love it local!
The fair will take place between 10:30 and 4:30 on Saturday, December
3rd 2011. There will be a full road closure along Mill Road between
East Road and Coleridge Road for the first time! We're very excited
about that because it will allow people to sing and dance and eat all
day long without interruptions!

The Red Lion at Whittlesford Bridge is set for a heroic opening

Following an impressive £1.25 million regeneration of one of the oldest inns within Cambridgeshire, The Red Lion at Whittlesford Bridge will welcome Lance Corporal Johnson Beharry VC for its official unveiling ceremony on 22 September 2011

Lance Corporal Johnson Beharry VC, distinguished for heroism during his service in Iraq, as well as his determination in the 2011 BBC TV series, ‘Dancing on Ice’, will be coming to Cambridge this month as guest of honour to open The Red Lion at Whittlesford Bridge.

Beharry is making a special guest appearance at the historic coaching inn, which dates back to the 13th century, and has been lovingly restored to create a chic new venue for Cambridgeshire with:

A brand new fully-equipped business centre

Banquet and function facilities for 120 guests

The Grill: British bistro dining and on-site bakery

18 contemporary boutique-styled bedrooms

Glass-roofed atrium and original architecture

Landscaped gardens with courtyard area

Private rooms for dining, meetings and events

In honour of its close association with the Armed Forces and in support of heroes present and past; such as Group Captain, Sir Douglas Bader, who was known to have frequented The Red Lion at Whittlesford Bridge, the owners will donate a large sum to causes close to Beharry’s heart: the Victoria Cross and George Cross Association and Help for Heroes. Since being awarded the highest military decoration for valour, the war hero has worked tirelessly for these charities and will be presented with a cheque during the ribbon-cutting launch event, which will be attended by specially invited guests.

The grand re-opening of The Red Lion at Whittlesford Bridge looks set to be a momentous revival for one of the region’s most historic places for people to meet, eat and sleep. It is now an exciting new venue for Cambridgeshire that encompasses every attention to detail for every occasion…

Fabulous Food

Destined to become the new eating experience in Cambridge, The Grill at The Red Lion at Whittlesford Bridge showcases British bistro-style dining at its best. With a new Executive Head Chef at the helm, the menu promises deliciously rustic dishes for private diners and family favourites such as a luxury carvery served every Sunday, alongside perfectly created cuisine for stylish weddings, corporate events and private parties.

Hospitality is at the heart of The Red Lion at Whittlesford Bridge and every feature is designed to create a special place to spend time together – whatever the event. Think brunch in the cosy snug; lovely long lunches with fine wines under a glass-roofed atrium; a romantic rendezvous by the inglenook fireplace; or gathering a group of friends in the oak-beamed bar. Whether you pop in for a coffee and a catch-up on the free Wi-Fi, or enjoy a meal with your family on the huge hand-made oak table, a friendly team will be there to provide you with warm and attentive service.

Relaxing Stay

A warm welcome awaits you at The Red Lion at Whittlesford Bridge. From arrival to departure, visitors will be embraced by the magic of this relaxing hotel set close to the historic city of Cambridge. The transformation of this traditional coaching inn blends traditional hospitality with en-suite boutique bedrooms that are designed to cosset you in comfort. There is a choice of unique rooms, named Comfy singles, Cosy doubles, Princely doubles, Queenly doubles and the Kingly double. All rooms provide every modern facility without losing any of their charm and heritage.

Business Hub

Set close to both Cambridge and the South East, via the M11, A11 and A505, with a train line to London just on your doorstep, this stunning venue is ideally located for business travellers and event organisers. Its brand new business centre and function room provides for up to 120 delegates, with the latest technology, Wi-Fi connectivity, guest larder, plus private dining rooms and breakout areas for presentations, awards meetings and events.

Wedding Destination

Cambridgeshire now has a fabulous new wedding and events destination, one that combines a stylish venue in a superb setting with 18 individually designed, boutique-style bedrooms, including a honeymoon suite with an in-room bathtub. The Red Lion at Whittlesford Bridge can set the scene for every occasion, from weddings breakfasts and civil ceremony banquets to formal functions, party nights and charity events – all within easy access of road and rail for your guests.

History & Heritage

Visitors to Cambridgeshire will love the easy-reach location of The Red Lion at Whittlesford Bridge as its setting has much to do with its long and illustrious past. Playing a key role in regional history, the building was originally founded as a priory in the 13th century and has welcomed many visitors throughout its 700-years: from destitute travellers in the 1200s to King James I of England when taken ill on a journey from Newmarket in 1619. His Majesty later granted a special licence to the hotel for the sale of wines. In more recent times, The Red Lion at Whittlesford Bridge became the social hub for service men and women stationed at nearby Duxford Airfield, now home to the Imperial War Museum.

After years of careful planning, months of meticulous renovation, and even the recent discovery of medieval remains, The Red Lion at Whittlesford Bridge has undergone a momentous transformation to rise again as one of the region’s greatest places to eat, drink, sleep and enjoy.

This month Anglia Ruskin University has plenty to offer in the way of arts activities, with the Mumford Theatre’s new season kicking off, featuring a typically eclectic and exciting blend of drama, comedy, music, and family shows.

The season starts in October with The Curriculum Vitae of Aurora Ortiz (Thurs 4 & Fri 5 Oct) a humorous production from local company Classworks about expectations, hopes and dreams.

Half-term at the Mumford Theatre promises to be an exciting one for all ages! Hare and Tortoise (Mon 24 Oct), aimed at children ages 4+, is a fantastic adaptation of Aesop’s fable. New for this half-term at the Mumford Theatre is a two day workshop for children ages 8-14. Participants will work with local company Keystage and Mumford Theatre staff to learn new acting techniques, experiment with stage effects and create a soundscape. The workshop is called Fall in Love with Theatre and aims to make sure children do just that! (Wed 26 & Thurs 27 October).

The free Lunchtime Concert Series has already begun and continues to attract an array of performers, including classical, pop and jazz artists. (Every Friday, 1.10pm, Mumford Theatre).

This month also sees the exhibition Everyday at the Ruskin Gallery, which promises to be an interesting take on how we see everyday objects around us.

Safe Refuge provides somewhere safe and welcoming where people can:

The Magic Brick Tree Book Launch

The mighty trees of the Botanic Garden have become the narrative centrepiece of a new beautiful children's story book, The Magic Brick Tree, created by Cambridge based young carers from Centre 33.  The children, who all provide significant care to another family member, worked alongside the artist, Alex Hirtzel and stroyteller, Marion Leeper to become story detectives and coax stories from the trees.

The children modelled the protagnists in plasticine, composed and photographed the scenes to create multi-layered artwprk that also includes beautiful illustrations and lino prints.  The stroyboards have been pulled together by CantellDay, a local graphic design agency, who turned the children's words, drawings and prints into a fully worked up layout that Cambridge University Press have published, pro bono, as a full colour, 32 page book.

The Magic Brick Tree will be launched during Cambridge University's Festival of Ideas and will be available to buy from the Botanic Garden Gift Shop and from Heffers bookstore on Trinity Street  All profits from the sale of the book will go towards funding future projects with Centre 33, a charity that supports local young carers agend 8 - 19 by providing support and arranging regular meetings, where the young carers can forget their day-to-day responsibilities and instead meet friends, have fun and be creative.  In other words, just be children.

To come to the book launch on Thursday 20 October 18:30 - 19:30 at Heffers Children's Bookshop please pre book on 01223 766 766 or visit the Festival of Ideas website
